STANDING IN THEATER FOR THE FIRST TIME; A nursing student’s experience

I’m sure every nursing student looks in their midwifery logbook and says “ I will do this later” . I’m one of those students lol. The whole year went by and I keep postponing witnessing my theater cases until it was too late, we had to give in the logbooks for review and there I was stranded without any theater case just because I was anxious and afraid of being in theater.

I got a last minute placement to finish off my theater cases. I remember that day like it was yesterday, I put on scrubs and confidently walked in theater. Nothing could have prepared me for that moment. The bright lights, the smell of antiseptic and the machines beeping non stop. I had seen deliveries in the ward but theater was a whole new world.

As a student I was in theater with my senior nurse. She pulled me closer to her and whispered “Are you ready to receive the babies” I looked her deep in her eyes as I stood the clueless. “Don’t worry I will show you” she said. A wave of relief came rushing in.

The surgeons started operating, myyyy gooodnessss I could not believe my eyes it was scary and magical. When they delivered the first baby, I trembled and almost lost myself for a moment. The nurse received the baby and she did the standard procedure while she was teaching. She was flawless. Just as she was prepping the first baby the surgeon said “ 2nd baby out”

I panicked, I didn’t know what to do but the nurse came to my rescue, I received the baby in the sterile linen, the baby was so cute and crying. The nurse assisted me with the second baby and all was well.

Theater can be intimidating for a student, but it’s also one of the most rewarding experiences in nursing
